Could you tell me the easiest and cheapest way to get to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard %26amp; Nantucket from Provincetown?
Provincetown Question
I%26#39;ve never actually done this. I assume you don%26#39;t have a car. If you do, drive to Hyannis and get a ferry to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. Otherwise, there are 4 in season (2 off season) bus trips a day between Ptown and Hyannis (Plymouth %26amp; Brockton Street Railway bus). At Hyannis, you can take a cab (short ride) either to the ferry terminal to get a ferry to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard or to the airport to fly there (expensive). There is no direct air or water service between Ptown and the islands. You can check connections at www.p-b.com for the bus, and web3.steamshipauthority.com/ssa/ or www.hy-linecruises.com for the ferry service.
Provincetown Question
The bus does get you from Ptown to Hyannis, but it%26#39;s hard to do it all in a day trip.
If you take the 6:45am bus out of Ptown you get to Hyannis a little after 8am. The last bus back to Ptown leaves at 4:30pm according to their web site schedule. The high speed ferry to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard takes approximately 1 hour each way and you have limited departurer times so your time on the island is pretty limited.
It%26#39;s a little more expensive (not that much), but I think your best bet is to rent a car at the Ptown airport and drive to Hyannis. You then don%26#39;t have to woryy about getting back from the island to Hyannis in time to make the last bus. You can take the last ferry back from the island and then drive back.
Hope that helps.
So Steve, you get the picture that you%26#39;ll be spending time that you could be using relaxing just working at traveling? And no one even mentioned Nantucket. Actually if you can select only one island, you might be better off choosing Nantucket. You won%26#39;t have to drive into Hyannis, search for a parking spot in one of the lots and pay to park. You can park free if you take just a day trip and if you go from Harwichport on www.nantucketislandferry.com. Then too Nantucket is more compact and doable on foot.
If you want to get a car in P-town you might check out Enterprise. Also, a new bus service is www.theflex.org. With this bus you travel around the outer Cape and to Harwich and Brewster as well. But you%26#39;re picking up a car at the airport when you fly in aren%26#39;t you?
