If you%26#39;ve never visited Nantucket, note that Nantucket doesn%26#39;t have a lot of hotels lining the beach like you might see in, say, Florida. The shops and restaurants are mostly concentrated in the town surrounding the harbor and marina on the sound side of the island. The public beaches are scattered around the perimeter of the island and are reached by driving, bicycle or shuttle bus. Much of the rest of the island is private homes.

Note also that there are two kinds of beaches: the north, or harbor side, which face the sound and have no surf, and the rest of the island, which has surf. The Wauwinet and the Summer House (at their Sconset location, not in town) have surf, but they are well out of town and you%26#39;ll need to travel into town to shop or visit most of the restaurants. The White Elephant is on the harbor at the edge of town and doesn%26#39;t have what I%26#39;d call a beach. Cliffside is on the sound about 3/4 mile from the town.

Consider taking a room in or near town, either at a full-service hotel (there are only a few) or a B%26amp;B (far more plentiful). That way you%26#39;ll be within walking distance of shopping, restaurants and night life in the evenings, and you can enjoying a choice of beaches via shuttle, bicycle or moped during the day.
