first time visitor

I%26#39;ll be staying in Dennisport last week of August thru Labor Day with our family- kids ages 8 and 10. I have not been to the Cape in 20 years and am interested in finding out about what we can do during our stay. Where could we bike, family places to eat dinner, special breakfast or ice cream spots etc.... What would you suggest for us first time visiters that are not familiar with the area. What other parts of the Cape should we check out?

Thanks for the help!

I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll get a lot of replies, so I%26#39;ll list just a few of our favorite activities.

Best place for biking is the Cape Cod Rail Trail:

Visit the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, and while you%26#39;re in the area, explore the old Brewster fulling mill and herring run:

We enjoy the food and view of Saquatucket Harbor at Brax Landing restaurant:

As another poster mentioned recently, the A%26amp;W Root Beer on Rte. 28 in Harwichport is a good place for a hot dog and root beer float, and the go-kart track is close by. Unfortunately, the Harwich Port Dairy Queen burned down a couple of years ago; that was always a favorite spot.

Also in Harwichport, Bonatt%26#39;s Bakery on Main Street serves up some very tasty doughnuts (or full breakfast, if you%26#39;d rather).

As I noted in another post, so far, this season has been a record-breaker for spotting right whales off the Cape. This is an endangered species. Your kids might enjoy a whale-watching trip out of Provincetown; you can also go on seal cruises to Monomoy, out of Chatham:

What kinds of things do your children like to do?

Notice the green bar at the top. Then Search in. Change Search in to Dennisport. Then type Dennisport into the next empty area and hit GO. You%26#39;ll have pages of poster%26#39;s information about Dennisport.

Also, call the Chamber and ask to receive this year%26#39;s booklet and any special events in town when you are there. (We enjoyed the waiters and waitresses contest held at the Lighthouse Inn about the time you%26#39;ll be there last season.) 800-243-9920. www.dennischamber.com. You%26#39;ll probably talk with LeeAnn or Spiro.

Drop in and see them when you arrive and pick their brains about dining and entertainment options. Location: Rt 28 and Rt. 134 on the SE corner by Kreme n Kone.

Don%26#39;t miss South Village Beach over by where it meets Swan River.

You can kayak or paddleboat ride on Swan River too. (Nantucket Sound side) Don%26#39;t miss the Bay side beaches like Mayflower. Check out the times to be at city hall to get your weekly beach pass....ask Leeann....so you don%26#39;t get stuck paying the full price to park. Also check out www.capeweek.com. So much more. Dennisport is a perfect spot for families from reasonably priced waterfront motels to a good stock of cottages to rent, to lots of kid-friendly dining and many activities from the beach to ice skating and bumper cars all in one friendly little town.

My best advice to you is to spend $20 and buy the most terrific guide book pertaining to Cape Cod and that is called An Explorer%26#39;s Guide: Cape Cod, Martha%26#39;s Vineyard %26amp; Nantucket by Kim Grant. I heard that the 7th edition is now out. Order it at your local bookstore or Amazon. $20.
